Suran River Tunnel for Power and Agricultural Growth in Parnai, Jammu & Kashmir

Transforming Suran River into a Power and Irrigation Resource

The Power Development Department has initiated an ambitious project to harness the potential of the Suran River for power generation and to provide much-needed irrigation facilities to the Mendhar area. This project involves diverting water from the Suran River near Baffliaz-Surankote to a power house located in the Mendhar region through a 9 km Head Race Tunnel (HRT). The diverted water will first be used for power generation, producing 224 million units (MU) of electricity annually, before being utilized for irrigation purposes in the dry Mendhar area.

Rodic Consultants Pvt. Ltd. has been engaged to supervise and guide the contractor to ensure the project is completed professionally and expediently. The unique selling proposition (USP) of this project lies in its significant infrastructure the 9 km HRT which is a critical component for efficient water diversion and power generation.

Ensuring Safe and Efficient Project Execution

Despite its promising potential, the project faces several challenges. The construction of the tunnel, which has a diameter of 3.2 meters, presents technical difficulties, particularly in areas with poor geological conditions. To address these issues, appropriate geological supports are being provided as required.

Another significant challenge is the reluctance of laborers to stay on-site due to security concerns, given the project's proximity to the Line of Control (LoC) and recent terrorist incidents in the area. Unfortunately, this challenge is beyond the control of the contractor and client, highlighting the complex and multifaceted nature of project management in such sensitive
